Teaching

My teaching draws upon my interdisciplinary expertise in global migration, race and ethnicity, economic sociologyqualitative methods and China studies. My pedagogy is deeply informed by the positionalities I have occupied—as a racial minority and international student in Western educational systems. These experiences exposed the limitations of dominant curricula to meaningfully reflect the lived realities of diverse communities. Furthermore, teaching during a period defined by the rise of AI has further deepened my awareness of the challenges faced by education to preserve a space for critical thought, creativity, and reflection.

In response to these challenges, my pedagogical approach is anchored in three key principles:  1) expanding the boundaries of the curriculum through a critical pedagogy that centers the lived experiences of marginalized communities; 2) using sociology as a lens to cultivate what anthropologist Xiang Biao (2021) describes as an awareness of “the nearby”—the everyday spaces where difference is routinely encountered, negotiated, and often overlooked; 3)  employing diverse forms of assessment to support a wide range of learning styles and needs.
